The Chemex was originally patented in 1941 and utilizes the pour over method to brew coffee. Made of non-porous borosilicate glass, a chemically inert material, the Chemex brews a very clean and consistent cup of coffee. The Chemex can easily brew multiple cups of coffee at once and doubles as a serving carafe.

Steps to brewing with a Chemex

Step 1 - Place filter in Chemex

Step 2 - Pour a small amount of water just-off-the-boil into filter to pre-rinse filter and pre-heat the Chemex

Step 3 - Pour out pre-rinse water from Chemex

Step 4 - Pour coarsely ground coffee into filter

Step 5 - Pour a small amount of water over the coffee grounds, just enough water to saturate all of the grounds

Step 6 - Allow the water to soak into the grounds for about 20-30 seconds, this is called blooming. It allows the water to soak into the grounds and push out the carbon dioxide that is trapped in the grounds

Step 7 - Over the next approx. 2 minutes, pour water in a spiral pattern over the grounds, evenly and consistently saturating the grounds

Step 8 - Wait for the coffee to finish draining through the filter (approx. 20-60 seconds)

Step 9 - Remove filter, pour coffee and enjoy
